Cracked, Chipped, or Lost Tooth? What to Do in a Dental Emergency

A dental emergency can happen when you least expect it. A chipped tooth during a weekend soccer game, a sudden toothache at night, or even a lost tooth after a fall. No matter the situation, knowing what to do (and acting quickly) can make all the difference in saving your smile.

At Landing Dentistry, we’re here to help you handle dental emergencies calmly and confidently. Here’s what to do if one strikes.

Cracked or Chipped Tooth

If you’ve cracked or chipped a tooth, don’t panic. It’s more common than you think.

What to do:

  • Rinse your mouth gently with warm water to clean the area.
  • If there’s bleeding, apply gauze with light pressure.
  • Use a cold compress on your cheek to reduce swelling.
  • Save any broken pieces of the tooth, if possible, and bring them with you.
  • Call our office right away so we can assess the damage and recommend treatment to restore your smile.

Severe Toothache or Sensitivity

A sudden toothache can signal an infection, a cracked tooth, or a deep cavity.

What to do:

  • Rinse your mouth with warm water.
  • Gently floss around the tooth to remove any trapped food.
  • Avoid applying aspirin directly to your gums. It can irritate.
  • If pain persists, contact our office immediately.
  • Early treatment can prevent more serious issues.

Knocked-Out Tooth

A lost tooth can feel like a nightmare, but quick action gives you the best chance of saving it.

What to do:

  • Handle the tooth by the crown (the top part), not the root.
  • Do not scrub or rinse it with soap or chemicals.
If possible, gently place the tooth back in its socket and hold it in place.
  • If that’s not possible, store it in milk or a tooth preservation kit—never in water.
  • Get to our office (or an emergency dental clinic) within 30–60 minutes. Time is crucial!

Lost Filling or Crown

If a filling or crown falls out, your tooth may feel sensitive or sharp.

What to do:

  • Keep the crown or filling if you can find it.
  • Avoid chewing on that side of your mouth.
  • You can apply dental wax or temporary cement from a pharmacy for short-term comfort.
  • Call us as soon as possible to have it repaired or replaced.
